Politics at Kimbolton

Politics has been taught at Kimbolton for 15 years and offers students the chance to study a dynamic and exciting subject at AS and A Level. The course is kept highly relevant to current events and is made up of papers in British, American and Comparative Politics. The emphasis is on theory, example, analysis and argument. Discussing and debating ideas, issues and events is an essential part of the course. Students are encouraged to think critically and independently. It is essential that they question the workings and basis of the political systems they study. Reading newspapers, journals and magazines helps develop political literacy, as does watching news programmes or political satire on television. Visits to Parliament and politics conferences are organised, and for some lucky students, participation in the school's annual American Exchange is possible where they get to visit Washington and experience the system first hand. Other activities include participation in the annual Bath International Schools Model United Nations debating competition and an active Politics and Philosophy Society. Politics is a lively and rewarding course developing skills in critical analysis, original thinking, written and oral expression, and, above all, an awareness of the world and power structures.

There are currently some 63 students taking A Level Politics.

The Politics Department teaching staff are:  Alison Bates (Head of Department), Christopher Bates and Sue Hutchinson. Results have been impressive over the years with a 100% pass rate; an A/B average of 70%; and an A/B/C average of 91%. In 2006 90% of students gained an A or a B.

The Department was rated 'very good' with an 'excellent standard of teaching' in Kimbolton's 2006 HMC Inspection Report.
